To Patch WAN/LAN for a Public IP Member

Introduction

Members who request a static Public IP Address for their networking equipment (normally a firewall/router) have two setup options:

Option A: Public IP address into the WAN port of their firewall/router (requires 1 available wallport in their office)

Option B: Public IP address into the WAN port as well as a LAN connection into their LAN port of their firewall/router so that they can broadcast DHCP on their VLAN/Private Network  (requires 2 available wallports in their office)

Present these options to the member’s technical contact and they will be able to notify you which they would like to proceed with.

If the member’s technical contact selects Option A only follow the WAN Patching section below. If they select Option B, follow the WAN Patching section and the LAN Patching section.

Before we can begin you will need to acquire the following -

  • One (if Option A) or Two (if Option B) 6ft ethernet cables are needed in the IT closet to properly patch a member's office (normally they are located somewhere in the IT Closet already).

  • Note the wallport number(s) the member will connect their firewall or router to before going to that floor's IT closet.

WAN Patching (Option A)

If the member’s technical contact selects Option A only follow the WAN Patching section below. If they select Option B, follow the WAN Patching section and the LAN Patching section.

In this section we will go over how to patch a WAN port. WAN ports are used to connect to the internet using a Member’s Public IP address.

  1. In the member’s office, note the office wallport number (i.e. “83”) that will be connected by your ethernet cable to the member’s firewall/router WAN port (member’s technical contact will be able to tell you) and then go to the IT closet.

  2. In the IT closet locate the corresponding wallport number on the wallport patch panel (black panel with cables going into it with white stickers and numbers on them) that matches the member’s wallport number in their office (i.e. “83”).

  1. In the wallport patch panel unplug the existing ethernet cable from both ends, removing it from the panel. You will replace the existing cable with the new 6ft ethernet cable. Plug one end of the 6ft ethernet cable under the matching wallport number. Leave the other end of the cable hanging in place.

  2. Remaining in the IT closet, locate the WAN patch panel.
The WAN patch panel has multiple ports labeled
WAN1 / WAN2 on the left hand side.

  3. Connect the free end of the 6ft ethernet cable to the next open WAN port (i.e. “WAN1”) on the WAN patch panel.

  4. Record the WAN patch panel port number that was used (i.e. “WAN1”) and the wallport patch panel number (“83”) from WAN steps 1-3.

  1. Send the following to isofy support

“WAN patch panel [INSERT NUMBER] connects to the wallport patch panel [INSERT NUMBER} in the [insert floor] IT closet. “

Important: If your member selected Option A you are complete. If your member selected Option B continue on to the LAN patching steps below.

LAN Patching (Option B)

The below LAN patching steps need to be followed only if your member selects Option B.

This section explains how to patch a LAN port to the isofy network so other devices on Wi-Fi or in other offices can connect to the member’s Firewall/Router.

  1. In the member’s office note the office wallport number (i.e. “84”) that will be connected by ethernet cable to the member’s firewall/router LAN port (member’s technical contact will be able to tell you) and then go to the IT closet.

In the IT closet locate the corresponding wallport number on the wallport patch panel (black panel with cables going into it with white stickers and numbers on them) that matches the member’s wallport number in their office (i.e. “84”).

  1. In the wallport patch panel unplug the existing ethernet cable from both ends, removing it from the panel. You will replace the existing cable with the new 6ft ethernet cable. Plug one end of the replacement 6ft ethernet cable under the matching wallport number. Leave the other end of the cable hanging in place.

  2. Remaining in the IT closet, locate the same WAN patch panel from Option A but look to the right side.
The WAN patch panel should have several ports labeled with three digit numbers on the right hand side (example: 197, 198, 199, 200)

  3. Connect the free end of your 6ft ethernet cable into the next open port with a three-digit number. (i.e. “197”)

  1. Record the WAN patch panel port number that was used (i.e. “197”) and the wallport patch panel number (“84”) from LAN steps 1-3.

  1. Send the following to isofy support

“WAN patch panel [INSERT NUMBER] connects to the wallport patch panel [INSERT NUMBER} in the [insert floor] IT closet. “
