Using Member Unmanaged Switches

Modified on Tue, 17 Dec, 2024 at 9:16 AM

Using an unmanaged switch is a technique that will allow multiple devices to connect directly, by ethernet, to the network while sharing a single wall port's connectivity.  isofy supports the use of unmanaged switches.

In order to support this setup, the steps below must be completed:

  1. Register the ethernet MAC address of the devices that will be connecting through the unmanaged switch in isofy. This must be completed before connecting through the unmanaged switch.
    • Registration can be completed by adding the device manually in the isofy dashboard OR
    • Registration can be completed by plugging the device one-by-one directly into the data or wall port. After plugging into the data port, the isofy captive portal will launch where the member can register their device.
  2. After the devices have been registered, ensure that the unmanaged switch' ethernet MAC address is also registered (only if available)
  3. Once done, connect a port of your unmanaged switch to a data port
  4. Connect all of your registered devices to ports on the unmanaged switch

Important to note:

  • The physical or ethernet MAC address of the connected devices (not Wi-Fi MAC addresses) must be registered.
  • Devices registered to members in multiple networks cannot be connected to the same unmanaged switch. All devices connected to the unmanaged switch must be registered to the same member, or to members that are within the same network. This includes Guest network.
  • All devices must be pre-registered before connecting to the unmanaged switch; unregistered devices are not served the captive portal and will cause issues if they are comingled with registered devices on the managed switch.
  • If you connect an unregistered device to your unmanaged switch, this may cause issues with all devices connected to that unmanaged switch. To resolve, please disconnect and register the device. Before re-connecting to the unmanaged switch, disconnect the unmanaged switch from the data port, disconnect and reconnect power on the unmanaged switch (if any), and reconnect everything now that all devices are registered.
