What is a private VLAN?

Modified on Thu, 16 Oct at 3:20 PM

VLAN stands for Virtual Local Area Network.

Traditionally, VLANs are used to segment network traffic between different departments or units within a company. For example, the sales team might not need access to the marketing team's internal resources. By separating this traffic, VLANs reduce unnecessary congestion on the network, improving overall performance and security.

Private VLANs expand upon this concept by treating each VLAN as its own isolated network. While hardware such as cabling, switches, and routers are shared, traffic cannot be directly transferred from one Private VLAN to another without specific routing configurations.

How do I know Organizations are Actually on their own Private VLAN?

Site staff can easily add a new Private VLAN as often as needed, such as when a new company moves into the space, by using the isofy dashboard.

Our software will automatically provision the new VLAN, and any users associated with that company will be placed into it.

MAC Address authentication ensures that a user's device is placed into the correct VLAN, regardless of where they are physically located in the building. This is managed through our captive portal or self-registration process.
